The university engineerCarl Zeiss opens a production facility for precision engineering and optics in Jena -the Carl Zeiss company is born. |
| 1866 | The Jena university professor Ernst Abbe joins the Zeiss production works. Abbe develops the optical principles for the scientific construction of microscopes. |
| 1884 | Otto Schott, Ernst Abbe and Carl Zeiss set up what was later known as the Jena Glass Works. |
| 1900 | The Carl Zeiss company develops into a leading optics company. |
| 1945 | Extensive destruction of the Jena Zeiss factories during the 2nd World War. |
| 1946 | Zeiss production facilities exist in both parts of Germany. |
| 1970 | A project business department is set up at Jena. |
| 1990 | The Zeiss companies in eastern and western Germany announce that they wish to join forces. |
